A large chandelier is the piece that pulls a whole room together. Over a dining table or in a double-height living room, one oversized rattan or bamboo chandelier sets the scale, casts a warm woven glow, and becomes the feature everyone notices first. Done well, it does the job of art, lighting and a focal point all at once.
Shoppers look for big, large and oversized chandeliers interchangeably, and whether you call it a rattan, cane, bamboo or wicker chandelier, the questions are the same: how big should it be, how low should it hang, and which bulb makes the weave glow instead of glare. This guide answers all of that and shows our favourite large handcrafted chandeliers.
Why go large with a chandelier
An undersized chandelier is the most common lighting mistake. A small fixture over a big table or in a tall room looks lost and lights nothing well. A large natural-fibre chandelier, by contrast, fills the space visually, spreads light across the whole table or seating area, and adds the warm texture that a flat ceiling light never can. In a high-ceiling living room or above a six-seater dining table, going big is not indulgent, it is correct.
Chandelier size and hanging height by room
A simple sizing rule: add the room's length and width in feet, and that number in inches is a good chandelier diameter. Over a dining table, instead aim for a chandelier about half to two-thirds the table's width. Here is a quick reference.
| Space | Chandelier diameter | Hanging height |
|---|---|---|
| Over a dining table | Half to two-thirds the table width | 75-90 cm above the tabletop |
| Living room (standard ceiling) | 50-80 cm | Base ~210 cm from the floor in walkways |
| Double-height / foyer | 80 cm and up, oversized | Centred in the volume, lowest point well clear of stairs |
| Bedroom | 40-60 cm | Above eye level, not over the bed centre if low |
How to choose a large chandelier
- Size it to the room or table using the diameter rules above, then go one size up rather than down for a statement look.
- Mind the ceiling height. Standard 10 ft ceilings suit 50-80 cm fixtures; double-height spaces can take a genuinely oversized chandelier.
- Pick the material and weave. Open rattan and cane weaves throw patterned light and feel airy; denser bamboo and jute shades give a softer, contained glow.
- Choose the bulb. A warm 2700K bulb makes the weave cast an amber glow; cool white makes it look stark.
- Check fitting and weight. A large chandelier needs a properly rated ceiling hook or box, ideally fixed to a joist.

Shop NowWhere a large chandelier works best
- Over the dining table: the classic spot. Size it to the table, not the room, and hang it low and intimate.
- Double-height living rooms and foyers: the one place a truly oversized chandelier looks right, filling the vertical volume.
- Above a staircase: a tall, cascading chandelier turns a stairwell into a feature.
- Large living rooms: centred over the seating, paired with softer lamps for layered light.
Bulbs and installation
- Use warm 2700K LED bulbs so the rattan or bamboo weave casts an amber glow, not a clinical white.
- Most of our chandeliers take standard E27 holders; check the listing for the exact count.
- A large chandelier is heavier than a pendant, so fix it to a ceiling joist or a properly rated box, and have an electrician hang anything sizeable.
- Add a dimmer where you can, so one fixture works for both dinner and everyday light.
Care
- Dust the weave gently with a soft brush or a hairdryer on cool, every few weeks.
- Avoid damp cloths on the natural fibre; spot-clean only if needed.
- Keep it away from constant direct sun to preserve the natural colour.
