A good wall lamp does something a table lamp cannot. It frees up your bedside table, throws soft light exactly where you want it, and turns a blank wall into something warm and lived-in. Bamboo and rattan wall lamps do all of that while casting a gentle, textured glow through the woven shade, the kind of light that feels calm rather than clinical.
This guide covers where rattan and bamboo wall lamps actually work, the right mounting height for a bedside or hallway lamp, how to choose between hardwired and plug-in, and which bulb gives you that warm, cozy light. Every lamp below is hand-woven by Indian artisans, so the texture you see in the photo is the real thing.
Quick answer: where wall lamps work & mounting height
Wall lamps suit almost every room, you just adjust the height and brightness to the job. Here is a quick map of where they work best and how high to mount them.
| Location | Mounting height | Light use |
|---|---|---|
| Bedside | 150 to 165 cm from floor | Reading and soft ambient light |
| Hallway | 160 to 175 cm from floor | Path lighting and a warm welcome |
| Living room | 150 to 170 cm from floor | Accent light beside art or a sofa |
| Bathroom | 165 to 180 cm, beside the mirror | Even, flattering face light |
How to choose a wall lamp
Five things decide whether a wall lamp feels right or wrong in a room. Run through them before you buy.
- Placement and height: decide the spot first, then set the height to the use. Bedside lamps sit low so light falls on your book, hallway lamps sit a little higher to wash the wall.
- Hardwired vs plug-in: hardwired lamps look cleaner with no visible cord, but need an electrician. Plug-in lamps trail a cord to the nearest socket and install in minutes, which is ideal for rentals.
- Shade material and weave: a tight rattan or cane weave throws dappled light and hides the bulb, an open bamboo frame lets more light spill through. Pick the look you want on the wall.
- Bulb warmth: warm white at 2700K to 3000K is the sweet spot for bedrooms and hallways. Cool white feels harsh against natural fibre.
- Up light or down light: a shade open at the top washes the ceiling for ambient light, one open at the bottom pools light downward for reading. Some do both.

- Bedside, one lamp each side: mount a pair at matching heights flanking the headboard so both sides get even reading light.
- Bedside, single bed or studio: one lamp on the side you read from, set just above shoulder height when sitting up.
- Hallway, long corridor: space lamps every 2.5 to 3 metres so the light overlaps and there are no dark gaps.
- Hallway, entry wall: a single lamp beside the entry mirror or console makes the first impression warm rather than stark.
- Switch reach: bedside lamps should switch from the bed, hallway lamps from the doorway. Plan the switch before you fix the lamp.
Bulbs & installation
- Bulb type: use an LED bulb to keep the woven shade cool. Natural fibre and high heat do not mix.
- Colour temperature: stick to warm white, 2700K to 3000K, for a cozy glow in bedrooms and hallways.
- Brightness: 400 to 600 lumens is plenty for ambient and reading light from a single wall lamp.
- Hardwired install: have an electrician add a wall box and switch, then mount the lamp over it for a clean, cordless look.
- Plug-in install: fix the bracket with the supplied screws and wall plugs, then route the cord neatly to the nearest socket, no electrician needed.
- Dimming: pair a dimmable LED with a dimmer switch to drop the light right down for a calm, late-evening setting.
