Wall Lights for Study Room

Why Use a Wall Lamp Instead of a Desk Lamp?

Because a wall lamp frees the entire desk surface, which matters more in a study than anywhere else in the house — a desk lamp takes the corner you wanted for books, papers or a second monitor. Mounting the light on the wall also puts it above and to the side of the page rather than beside your hand, so it lights what you are reading instead of casting a shadow across it. The second gain is less obvious: a wall lamp behind or beside a monitor lifts the brightness of the wall itself, which reduces the eye strain that comes from staring at a bright screen against a dark background. A wall-mounted lamp frees the whole desk surface, which matters more in a study than anywhere else in the house, and puts light where you are reading rather than on the ceiling. Where should a study wall lamp be mounted?

Mount above or beside the desk, over a bookshelf, or beside a reading chair. A wall lamp behind a monitor also lifts the wall brightness, which reduces the eye strain that comes from staring at a bright screen against a dark wall.

What bulb and height suit a study wall lamp?

Mount at roughly 150cm, about 40-50cm above the desk surface, on the side of your writing hand so the lamp does not shadow the page. Use a 2700-3000K warm white bulb, which stays comfortable over long sessions; avoid cool white.

Can wall lights be fitted in a rented flat?

Only where a wired wall point already exists — a sconce is a fixed fitting, so adding a new point means chasing the wall and needs the landlord's consent and an electrician. Where no point exists and the wall cannot be cut, a floor lamp or a plug-in table lamp gives the same layered light with no fixing at all.
