The best balcony lighting for an Indian flat is one warm fitting on the wall or slab of the covered part, set back from the rain, plus a lamp near the seating. Woven rattan, bamboo and seagrass shades suit covered balconies only. An open balcony needs a sealed, outdoor-rated fitting.
Which kind of balcony do you actually have?
Most apartment balconies fall into one of four types, and the type decides the lamp before style does.
- Covered: the balcony of the flat above forms your roof, and the depth is enough that rain only reaches the outer edge in a storm. This is where natural-fibre lighting belongs.
- Semi-covered: there is a slab above, but the balcony is shallow, so monsoon rain blows in through the grill and the afternoon sun reaches the back wall.
- Open: a top-floor balcony, a terrace-style ledge or a slab that stops short. Rain falls straight onto the fittings.
- Enclosed: sliding glass or a full mesh. Treat it as an indoor room and light it like one.
The easy test is to stand against the back wall during a heavy shower and note where the floor stays dry. The dry strip is where a woven lamp can go. Why rain is only half the problem
No rattan, bamboo, cane or seagrass lamp is waterproof, ours included, and every one of our product pages says to keep the shade away from damp. Rain is the obvious risk, but two slower ones decide how long a balcony lamp looks good.
Trapped moisture. A shade that gets splashed and then dries slowly in still, humid air is where mould starts. Controlling moisture is the practical way to keep mould from taking hold (US EPA, Mold Course Chapter 2). On a balcony that means keeping the lamp where it stays dry and where air can move around it, not tucked into a closed corner behind a stack of pots.
Sun and wind. West-facing balconies take the harsh afternoon sun, which dries out and bleaches a natural finish over time. High floors add wind. If clothes on the drying stand flap on an ordinary evening, a pendant on that balcony will swing too. Both point the same way: on an exposed balcony, choose a fitting fixed close to the wall or slab rather than one that hangs.
Wall point or ceiling point?
Many flats come with a single balcony light point from the builder, either on the wall beside the balcony door or in the middle of the slab. Use what you have before adding anything.
A wall point is the better one for sitting out. A sconce on the wall you share with the room lights the chairs, the plants and the floor, and throws its glow back towards the flat rather than out at the building opposite. A ceiling point on a low slab takes a flush mount best. A pendant only makes sense on a deep, sheltered balcony where there is no wind and no one walks beneath it. If you want to move the point, add a second one or run a socket outdoors, ask a licensed electrician: an outdoor socket needs a weather-protected box, and that is their call, not a DIY job.

The swing and the light compete for the same slab. A jhula hangs from a hook in the ceiling and moves in an arc, so a pendant anywhere near that arc will be hit sooner or later, and a light fixed right next to the hook shines down into the eyes of whoever is sitting in it.
The better layout is to light the wall beside or behind the jhula. A sconce at one side throws light across the seat for reading and leaves the hook area clear. If the only point is in the slab, fit a flush mount and keep it well away from the swing's path. Before anyone drills for the hook, check the slab and the load as set out in how to hang a jhula safely. The hook matters more than the lamp.

Balcony hanging lights look lovely in photographs, and they work in real flats under three conditions: the balcony is covered and deep, the air is still on most evenings, and the pendant sits outside the walking line to the railing and the drying rack. Keep the drop short so the bottom of the shade stays comfortably above head height, and choose a light shade over a heavy one, since a lighter pendant puts less strain on the slab point. If your balcony fails any of the three, a wall lamp or flush mount will serve you better every day.

No light point at all?
Plenty of older flats have no balcony point, and the society may not allow new wiring on the outer wall. Two workable options: have an electrician add a point on the inner wall, which is usually simpler than the facade, or use a portable table lamp that comes out for the evening and goes back inside afterwards. Do not run an indoor extension cord through a sliding door, where the frame can pinch it shut, and never leave an indoor lamp out overnight in the monsoon.
Whatever you choose, a quick wipe with a dry cloth after a humid week and a check that the underside of the shade is dry will keep a woven balcony lamp looking right for years.
