Wicker baskets go in base units, not wall units. They need a drawer that pulls out on channels, an internal width between roughly 16 and 22 inches, and a spot away from the hob and the sink. Decide this while the carcasses are being made, not after.
Most guidance about kitchen baskets starts once you already own one. This is the earlier conversation: the one you have with a modular kitchen designer or carpenter while the layout is still on paper, when a basket costs you nothing to plan in and a fair amount to add later.
Which cabinet units can take a wicker basket?
Only base units — the run of cabinets under the counter. A wicker basket is pulled out and looked down into, so it needs to sit below eye level. In a wall unit you would be reaching up into something you cannot see, and the weight of a loaded basket at shoulder height is genuinely unpleasant to handle.
Within the base run, a basket needs a bay wide enough to take one of the standard sizes, and it needs to be on pull-out channels rather than sitting on a fixed shelf. A basket you have to bend down and drag out by hand gets used for a fortnight and then ignored.
| Basket size (inches) | Suits |
|---|---|
| 16 x 16, 16 x 20 | Narrow bays, a single-column tandem unit, small kitchens |
| 18 x 18, 18 x 20 | The most common fit in Indian modular runs |
| 20 x 16 to 20 x 20 | Standard base units; the usual onion-and-potato drawer |
| 21 x 20, 22 x 16, 22 x 18 | Wide bays and larger pantry pull-outs |
| 22.5 x 20 | The widest bays, typically a dedicated vegetable unit |
Do not order from that table alone. Cabinet internal width is not the same as the external module size, and channel hardware eats into it. Measure the opening properly first — our modular kitchen basket sizing guide walks through exactly where to put the tape.
What to tell your modular kitchen designer
Kitchen vendors quote in modules and accessories. If you say nothing, you get whatever basket their standard accessory package includes, which is usually a steel wire basket. Four things are worth saying explicitly, before the carcasses are cut:
- Which bay is the vegetable drawer. Name the cabinet. It should be near where you prep, not at the far end of the run past the fridge.
- That it runs on telescopic channels. The basket sits in a frame that pulls fully out. Ask for full-extension channels so the back of the basket is reachable.
- The internal width you need. Give the number. "Wicker basket" alone leaves the vendor to guess, and their guess will match their supplier, not your basket.
- That you are supplying the basket. Say this early. It changes what they quote, and it means the bay is built to your dimension.
What do modular kitchen baskets cost?
Basket accessories are one of the places a kitchen quote quietly inflates, because they are listed as a line item per unit and most people approve the whole package without pricing it separately.
Our handwoven kitchen baskets run Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 depending on size, and they drop into a bay built to the right internal width. The thing to compare is not basket against basket but the vendor's accessory line against buying the bay empty and filling it yourself. Ask for the quote itemised; if baskets are bundled into a lump-sum accessory figure, ask what comes out if you remove them.
Where not to put a wicker basket
Three placements cause nearly all the regret, and all three are avoidable on the drawing.
Directly beside the hob. Airborne grease settles on everything near a cooktop, and a woven surface holds it in a way a laminate drawer front does not. Leave at least one bay between the basket and the burners.
Under the sink. This is the one people regret most. Under-sink cabinets carry the waste pipe and the water connections, and they collect condensation and the occasional slow leak. Controlling moisture is the whole of controlling mould (US EPA, Mold Course, chapter 2), and a natural fibre sitting in a damp enclosed cabinet is the wrong material in the wrong place. Keep cleaning supplies there instead.
The tall pantry unit's top half. Same reaching problem as a wall unit, with more weight. Baskets belong in the lower half of a tall unit if they go in one at all.
Retrofitting into a kitchen you already have
You do not need a new kitchen. If a base cabinet already has a pull-out drawer, measure the internal width and depth and a basket will very often drop straight in, either sitting inside the existing drawer or replacing the drawer box on the same channels.
If the cabinet is a shutter with a fixed shelf behind it, the honest answer is that a carpenter needs to fit channels and a frame. That is a half-day job and worth doing on one cabinet, not five. Pick the bay nearest your prep counter. The mechanics of that fit are covered in our guide to wicker pull-out baskets for kitchen cabinets.
Design details that make it look intentional
A wicker basket in a run of flat laminate reads either as a deliberate material contrast or as an accident, and the difference is mostly alignment.
Keep the basket behind a cabinet front that matches the rest of the run, so the weave is a surprise when you open it rather than a broken line across the elevation. If you want the texture visible on the face, do it more than once — a single exposed woven front in an otherwise uniform kitchen looks like something was left unfinished. And keep the tone consistent: a natural, un-dyed weave sits well against both white and wood-finish laminates, while a dark stain fights a light kitchen.
For a basket that has to hold two things apart — onions one side, potatoes the other — a partitioned basket does the job, and we compare those against the Ebco and Hettich equivalents in a separate piece on partitioned kitchen baskets.
