There is a moment most living rooms reach where the sofa is right, the rug is right, the plants are thriving, and yet the space still feels flat after sunset. Nine times out of ten the missing piece is the light. Not more of it, but warmer, softer, more textured light. That is exactly what a rattan lamp does. The handwoven weave breaks a plain bulb into a pattern of glow and shadow, and suddenly the room has a mood it never had before.
A rattan lamp is the quiet upgrade your living room and bedroom secretly need. Whether you call it rattan, cane, bamboo, wicker or jute, the natural weave brings the same warmth, and it suits almost every Indian home, from a boho rental flat to a Japandi villa. This guide walks through every type of rattan lighting, a pendant lamp overhead, a table lamp on the nightstand, a floor lamp by the reading chair, and a wall lamp beside the bed, so you can pick the right rattan light for every corner.
Quick answer: which rattan lamp goes where
If you only have a minute, here is the short version of how the main types of rattan lighting map to your living room and bedroom.
| Lamp type | Best room and spot | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rattan pendant light | Living room centre, dining table, bedroom over nightstands | Statement overhead glow and ceiling shadow patterns |
| Rattan table lamp | Bedroom nightstand, console, side table | Soft pools of light for reading and bedside calm |
| Rattan floor lamp | Living room reading corner, beside the sofa or armchair | Tall ambient light that fills an empty corner |
| Rattan wall lamp | Bedside wall, hallway, living room feature wall | Accent light that saves floor and table space |
| Rattan ceiling light | Low-ceiling bedrooms, passages, small living rooms | Flush, space-saving overhead light with weave texture |
Most homes end up mixing two or three of these. A pendant overhead for the main glow, a table lamp or floor lamp for warmth at eye level, and a wall lamp for the spots where a stand simply will not fit.
Why a rattan lamp changes a room
Plain bulbs and frosted glass shades give you light, but they give you nothing to look at. A rattan, cane or bamboo shade does both jobs at once. During the day it reads as a sculptural natural object, all warm browns and handwoven texture. After dark it turns into a lantern, throwing soft lines of light and shadow across the ceiling and walls.
That texture is why rattan lighting has become a staple of boho, coastal, Scandinavian, farmhouse and Japandi interiors. The natural weave softens hard modern surfaces, adds an earthy layer next to wood and linen, and makes a room feel calmer and more lived-in. Because every Akway lamp is handwoven by Indian artisan families from sustainable rattan, cane and bamboo, no two pieces cast exactly the same shadow.
How to choose a rattan lamp for your room
Picking the right rattan light is less about the lamp and more about the room around it. Run through these steps before you buy.
- Decide the job first. Do you want a statement overhead piece, soft bedside light to read by, or a tall lamp to fill an empty corner? The job points you to pendant, table, floor or wall.
- Match the size to the space. A big living room can carry a 24 or 30 inch pendant, while a cosy bedroom corner suits a compact 14 inch lamp or a slim table lamp.
- Check the ceiling height for pendants. Low ceilings want a flush ceiling light or wall lamp, taller rooms can take a dramatic hanging pendant.
- Pick the weave density. An open, airy weave throws bold shadow patterns, a tighter weave gives a softer, more even glow.
- Plan the bulb and switch. Make sure there is a power point or ceiling box where you want the lamp, and choose a warm bulb (more on that below).
- Layer your lighting. One lamp rarely does it all. Combine an overhead pendant with a table or floor lamp so you can dial the mood up or down.
The types of rattan lighting, explained
Rattan lighting is not one product. Here are the main types and where each one earns its place in your home.
Rattan pendant lights
The pendant is the showpiece of rattan lighting. A handwoven rattan or bamboo pendant hangs from the ceiling and becomes the focal point of the room, throwing the weave's shadow across the ceiling and walls. Use a large pendant over a living room seating area or dining table, or hang a pair of smaller pendants on either side of the bed as pendant bedside lights. Cluster two or three at different heights for a designer look over a stairwell or double-height space.
Rattan table lamps
A rattan table lamp is the friendliest way to add warm light at eye level. It sits on a nightstand, console or side table and pools soft light right where you need it, perfect for reading in bed or warming up a living room corner without rewiring anything. Because it simply plugs in, a table lamp is the easiest rattan upgrade for a rental home. A cane or jute shade on a slim base suits both the bedroom and the living room.
Rattan floor lamps
A rattan floor lamp is the answer to the empty living room corner. Standing tall beside a sofa or armchair, it delivers ambient light from above table height and fills vertical space that a small lamp cannot reach. Place one next to your favourite reading chair with a warm bulb, add a plant and a side table, and you have an instant cosy nook. Floor lamps work hardest in larger living rooms and beside beds where a nightstand is too small.
Rattan wall lamps and sconces
When floor and table space is tight, a rattan wall lamp or wicker wall sconce does the work without taking up an inch of surface. Mounted beside the bed it becomes a reading light that frees up the nightstand. On a living room feature wall, beside artwork or a mirror, it adds focused accent light and textural interest. Cane webbing wall lamps in particular cast beautiful filtered patterns onto the wall behind them.
Rattan ceiling lights
For low-ceiling bedrooms and passages where a long pendant would hang too low, a flush or semi-flush rattan ceiling light gives you the same handwoven texture in a space-saving shape. It sits close to the ceiling, spreads soft overhead light, and still glows with that signature weave pattern. Think of it as the pendant's practical cousin for compact rooms.

The lamp is only half the story, the bulb decides how good it looks. A few simple rules get the warm, glowing effect every time.
- Go warm white, around 2700K. Warm light makes the natural weave glow amber and is the single most important choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Use LED bulbs. They run cool, which protects the natural rattan and bamboo from heat, and they last for years.
- Stay within the wattage limit. Most Akway lamps use a standard E27 holder and suit LED, CFL or Edison filament bulbs up to 60W. Check each product for its exact limit.
- Try Edison filament bulbs for drama. A visible filament behind an open weave looks beautiful in pendants and floor lamps.
- Add a dimmer if you can. Being able to soften the light in the evening makes a rattan lamp even more inviting.
How to care for your rattan lamp
Natural rattan, cane and bamboo last for years with very little effort. A little routine care keeps the weave looking fresh.
- Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or feather duster, and use a soft brush for hard-to-reach gaps in the weave.
- For deeper cleaning, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
- Keep lamps indoors and away from excessive moisture, direct rain and strong direct sunlight, which can fade the colour.
- Use only LED bulbs and stay within the wattage limit to protect the natural material from heat.
- Natural rattan ages beautifully and deepens in colour over time, so a little patina is part of its charm.
