New Home Lighting Plan for Chennai, Room by Room

Rattan hanging light over a dining table in a new Chennai home - Akway

Plan a new home's lighting in three layers per room: one ceiling fixture for general light, one or two task lights where people read or cook, and one accent light to lift a dark corner. A 3BHK in Chennai typically lands at 16 to 22 fixtures.

Most new homes in Chennai and Coimbatore get their lighting decided in the last fortnight before handover, by which point the ceiling points are already cast and the only choice left is which fitting goes where. Planning it earlier, room by room, costs nothing and changes how the house feels for years.

Quick answer: work room by room and layer three sources in each: ambient from the ceiling, task light where it is needed, accent light for corners. Budget 16-22 fixtures for a 3BHK. Buy multiples of one pendant for kitchen and dining rather than mixing designs. Keep every bulb in the house at the same warm white colour temperature.

How many fixtures does a 3BHK actually need?

More than most plans allow for, because the plan counts ceiling points and forgets walls and corners.

Room Ambient Task Accent
Living room 1 pendant or ceiling light 1 floor lamp by the seating 2 wall lights
Dining 1 pendant, 75-90 cm above the table - 1 sideboard lamp
Kitchen 1 ceiling light 2-3 pendants over the counter or island -
Master bedroom 1 ceiling light 2 bedside wall lights 1 corner lamp
Bedroom 2 and 3 1 ceiling light each 2 bedside each -
Stairs / entry 1 tall pendant - 2 sconces

That comes to roughly 20. A duplex with a double-height living area or a long entrance passage will need more.

Buy kitchen and dining pendants in multiples

This is the single clearest pattern in how Tamil Nadu customers buy, and it is worth copying.

Our finding: Across Akway orders shipped to Tamil Nadu in the twelve months to August 2026, lighting made up 91% of all units. Chennai's average order value was Rs 11,818 against a national average of Rs 8,019, and the state recorded 14 orders above Rs 15,000. The largest Chennai orders were multi-unit and repeat-SKU: 27 units in one order, and another with 10 of a single kitchen pendant.

Ten of one pendant is a kitchen island and a breakfast counter being done properly. Two or three matched pendants over a counter light the work surface evenly and look intentional; three different ones look like three separate decisions. Our guide to kitchen island pendants covers spacing and drop heights.

The staircase is worth one good piece

Independent houses and duplexes across Chennai and Coimbatore almost always have a stairwell that goes unlit beyond a single bulb. A long-drop fixture is seen from the landing and the hall at once, which is why it repays the spend.

Why should the whole house use one bulb colour?

Because mixed colour temperatures are visible from every doorway, and once seen they cannot be unseen. Warm white sits around 2700K; cool white runs 5000K to 6500K (US Department of Energy, retrieved 31 August 2026). A warm living room seen through the door of a cool white kitchen makes both rooms look wrong.

Pick warm white for living areas and bedrooms. If you want brighter, more neutral light over a kitchen work surface, make that a deliberate zone rather than an accident, and keep it consistent across the whole kitchen.

Heat, humidity and coastal air in Chennai

Chennai's coastal humidity is a genuine consideration for natural fibre, though a less severe one than an open Goan verandah. Wood and natural fibres are hygroscopic, taking up and giving off moisture with the surrounding air, which is what drives swelling and movement (USDA Forest Service, Wood Handbook, ch. 4, retrieved 31 August 2026). Indoors, with fans and air movement, this is a non-issue. On a sea-facing open balcony it is not.

Keep woven fixtures indoors or under cover, and dust them regularly. Coimbatore's drier inland climate is easier on natural fibre than the Chennai coast.

Corner lamps do more than another ceiling point

A living room lit only from the centre has dark edges and feels smaller than it is. One floor lamp in the far corner changes the proportions of the room more than a brighter ceiling fixture would.

Frequently asked questions

How many pendants go over a kitchen island?
Two for an island up to about 1.8 metres, three beyond that, evenly spaced and all the same design. Hang them so the bottom sits roughly 75-90 cm above the counter.
Is warm white too dim for an Indian kitchen?
No. Brightness is set by the bulb's lumen output, not its colour temperature. You can have warm white light that is very bright; the two settings are independent.
Do I need a light in every corner of the living room?
Not every corner, but at least one. A single accent or floor lamp on the far side of the room removes the dark edge that makes a living room feel boxed in.
Are rattan lights suitable for Chennai's humidity?
Indoors, yes. Natural fibres take up moisture from the air, so keep them out of exposed, sea-facing outdoor positions and make sure air moves around them.
